A journey through an elongated pathway towards complex lipids

In this talk I will summarize my research journey, what started with understanding the role and

function of ELOVL4 (Elongation of very long chain fatty acid 4) in the Retina. While exploring

ELOVL4, I generated interest in another group of complex lipids, Sphingolipids. Sphingolipids and

their signaling is a relatively unexplored but promising area of retinal/eye research due to their proven

roles in neurodegeneration, inflammation, and neovascularization, which are highly relevant to major

eye diseases. I devoted my major efforts towards studying Sphingolipids in retinal and ocular

diseases in the last 12 years and identified many connections and association of sphingolipids with

various ocular conditions. However, I still remain connected to ELOVL4 studies and development

through my mentors and colleagues. I hopefully will stay in this elongated route of scientific journey

by exploring ELOVL4 products, very-long-chain fatty acid containing sphingolipids, in mammalian

biology and diseases.
